Celebrated on 22 May every year, this event aims to increase our understanding and awareness of biodiversity issues. In 2019, the International Day for Biological Diversity focuses on biodiversity as the foundation for our food and health with its theme: “Our Biodiversity, Our Food, Our Health”.
In the last 100 years, more than 90% of crop varieties have disappeared from fields and 17 main fishing grounds are now being fished at or above their sustainable limits. With these facts in mind, and following the recent IPBES report announcing that species extinction rates are accelerating, the International Day for Biological Diversity will focus this year on raising awareness of the dependency of our food systems, nutrition and health on biodiversity and healthy ecosystems.
