The architect Vincent Callebaut takes inspiration from nature to imagine the cities of tomorrow transformed into genuine ecosystems. Focus on 3 projects illustrating how nature and architecture can benefit each other.

PARIS SMART CITY 2050

The PARIS SMART CITY 2050 project looks to the future as part of the City of Paris’ Air Quality, Energy & Climate Action Plan which aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 75% by 2050.

The study proposes eight “vertical” villages grafted on to the existing fabric of the city to counter the urban heat island effect whilst sustainably densifying the city.

 

 

PARIS SMART CITY 2050 - Notre-Dame

This organic urban development plan, ordered by the Paris City authority and urban ecology departments, transforms a grey, mineral and impervious Paris into a green, plant-covered and permeable Paris.

PARIS SMART CITY 2050 - Porte d’Aubervilliers

This new development would cure the space formerly dedicated to the automobile and would separate the historic centre from the suburbs.

PARIS SMART CITY 2050 - XIIIe arrondissement

The old tower blocks in the 13th “arrondissement” of Paris covered with bamboo mesh nets supporting community vegetable gardens.

PARIS SMART CITY 2050, Montsouris Park

The circular railway line would be turned into communal orchards, while its tunnels would accommodate sports centres, covered markets and even mushroom farms.

LILYPADS, MONACO

This floating ecopolis is inspired by the radial and concentric structure of the leaves of the giant Amazonian lilies, whose remarkable plasticity is applied to marine architecture.

Designed by the architect about ten years ago, these Lilypads are a prototype of an amphibian city, which produces its own oxygen and electricity, recycles CO2 and waste, and provides a habitat for future climate refugees from submerged regions.

NAUTILUS ECO RESORT, PHILIPPINES

The Nautilus Eco-Resort project is a pioneering concept for an eco-tourism complex based on biomimetics, which enables visitors to discover the local natural environment whilst helping to protect it.

This zero-emission, zero-waste and zero-poverty hotel complex, which is also a learning centre, applies the concept of upcycling to architecture : all the constructions are made by 3D-printing locally recycled waste using an intricate process.
